from 16 reviewsThe character development is excellent. The content is always darker than I prefer but I am living for the power development and mystery. Keep them coming, and in audio book format!
I’m a serious bibliophile and get pretty attached to books as it were, but when I tell you that this book starts the series that changed my life, I mean it. I’ve learned so much about myself, these beautiful characters, and made friends in totally not a cult that have given my life new light. I will never not recommend and bought an extra copy to pass around to all my friends to get them hooked as well. Thank you. Thank you for everything.
WHEEL OF FATE is the culmination of the second season generally, and Laurence's deal with Rufus, specifically. The warlock who has been manipulating things in the background and was identified in SPELLS OF SUMMER has finally made his move: demanding that Laurence and Rufus provide him with a particular spellbook from Rufus's sanctum. It's great, excellently crafted and just the right level of intense for this point in the series.

RUNES OF FALL finally takes Quentin, Laurence, and the teens on the promised trip with Neil Storm and his sister, Ames. They head out on a helicopter into the desert to blow off steam and let Quentin practice his powers where he can’t hurt anyone.

As tense and hectic as SPELLS OF SUMMER is, it feels like it might be the calm before an even greater storm.

SIGILS OF SPRING weaves together the search for a therapist with the intrusion of a ghost hunter and a side of kidnapping, forcing Quintin to work through some issues in unexpected ways. As per usual, what Quintin and Laurence are trying to accomplish in their personal lives is disrupted by the intervention of someone wildly out of their control, and not at all welcome.

As a sequel, RITES OF WINTER seems set up to serve as a good bridge between the previous arc involving Quentin's abusive father, and what is shaping up to be the next major story arc involving a malevolent figure, this time connected to Rufus (Laurence's tutor in magic).

PAGE OF TRICKS is where everything comes to a head, where Laurence, Quentin, Frederick, and Michael end up colliding together in the worst way.

I like this as an introduction and as a story in its own right. There's a nice balance between worldbuilding and characterization, especially in such a short tale. The audiobook is excellent, conveying Jon's very dry sense of humor with ease.

I love retellings. This let me have the feeling of a retelling without leaving the series!

In LORD OF RAVENS, Quentin and Laurence find themselves with different paths for protecting the children in their care from a horrifying danger.

As the first book in the series, BLIND MAN'S WOLF has a self-contained story which revolves around the mystery of why Ellis’s guide dog is misbehaving. It turns out this issue and its resolution are more complicated than anticipated, but what's not (very) complicated is how much Randall and Ellis want to get into each other's pants.

KNIGHT OF FLAMES continues the themes of consent and boundaries which began in JACK OF THORNS, but this time with an antagonist who can control people with his voice. As Laurence and Quentin work on their relationship with each other (navigating Quentin's telekinetically enhanced panic attacks and Laurence's need for physical intimacy), they continually emphasize consent and communication, and I'm enjoying them as individuals and as a couple.

I wrote a full review after my first read-through (you can find that here: https://reviews.booksthatburn.com/2024/03/faulkner-jack.html). After having read the series so far, uhhh, 3-4 times in the year since I discovered it, my general thoughts are: This is an excellent start to a fantastic series, Myriam is best mom, Laurence and Quentin start great and keep getting better, and the starter villain for the series is suitably insidious.
This one is a slow burn, folx, but it's SO worth it! Laurence and Quentin come from two vastly different backgrounds, and that's evident in the writing (which is wonderful all by itself, not to mention the actual story being told). In this book, they're still figuring themselves out, let alone the idea of romance with each other. Believable characterization, gripping storyline, fantastic writing quality... what are you waiting for? GO READ IT
